News Gilbert win dramatic first stage
LES HERBIERS, France: Belgian Philippe Gilbert of the Omega Pharma team won an incident-filled first stage of the Tour de France here on Saturday and took the race leader’s yellow jersey.
Defending champion Alberto Contador of Spain was involved in a mass pile-up 9km from the finish and cam home almost 90sec off the pace set by Gilbert, who this season dominated the hilly Ardennes Classics, winning the Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege inside eight days.
The trio of Jeremy Roy, and Tour debutants Perrig Quemeneur and Lieuwe Westra led an early breakout from the off, but were gradually hauled back in by Gilbert’s team with some 20km to go of the 191.5km run from Passage du Gois to Mont des Alouettes.
In a dramatic climax, the peloton was effectively sliced in two when an Astana rider clipped a stray spectator and rebounded into the main body of riders, including Contador, to cause a massive pile-up.
There was then another pile-up which cut the lead body of riders to around 30.
Gilbert bade his time as first Alexandre Vinkourov and then Fabien Cancellara sprinted through to the front.
Cancellara, however, bolted too soon, allowing Gilbert to catch him on the last-but-one turn and the Belgian coasted home from 500m to finish 3sec ahead of Australian Cadel Evans, with Norwegian Thor Hushovd leading the chasing peloton at 6sec.

Cook score helps to england (cricket)
LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook's career-best century kept Sri Lanka at bay in the third one-day international (ODI) at Lord's here on Sunday.
But with no other England batsman making more than Kevin Pietersen's 41, the hosts were still held to 246 for seven.
England's total would have been considerably worse had not Cook been reprieved on 15 when Mahela Jayawardene dropped a regulation slip catch.
As it was Cook, also dropped by Thilina Kandamby at third man on 103, went on to make 119.
He shared stands of 72, with Ian Bell (30), and 75, with Tim Bresnan (26) for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively after England had collapsed to 85 for four.
Cook was on course to become only the second batsman, after fellow England left-handed opener Nick Knight, to bat through a full 50-over ODI innings when he was run out attempting a bye by Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara.
In all he faced 143 balls with 13 fours -- not the most rapid run-rate but hugely valuable in the context of the match.
This was only Cook's second century in 29 ODI innings and his highest, surpassing the 102 made against India at Southampton in 2007.
The 26-year-old who in Sri Lanka's 69-run series levelling win at Headingley on Friday won the toss and fielded because England would "quite fancy chasing" only to see the tourists pile up 309, opted to bat first at Lord's.
Cook, belying his reputation as a slow scorer, forced Angelo Mathews off the backfoot for four in the first over.
It was the only over Mathews, struggling with a knee injury, bowled.
Cook should have been out when he edged Nuwan Kulasekara only for the normally reliable Jayawardene to drop the two-handed chance.
Pietersen, looking in excellent touch, dominated a third wicket stand of 49, of which Cook's share was just seven, before leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis checked England's recovery with two wickets.
First he induced Pietersen, who faced just 43 balls, to sky a sweep to deep square leg where Suraj Randiv held a well-judged catch and Mendis then had left-hander Eoin Morgan lbw for four.
England trump to australians for fifth spot
| AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: England beat Australia 2-0 to take fifth place in the women's field hockey Champions Trophy here Sunday. Fresh from beating Australia 3-2 in the last pool match Friday, the English had Beckie Herbert and Chloe Rogers to thank for their goals while goalkeeper Beth Storry played a stormer to keep a clean sheet. Helen Richardson set up England's first goal early in the game with a self-pass free hit near the top of Australia's circle, pushed to the left post for Herbert to rebound off the pads of Australian keeper Rachael Lynch into the left of goal. Rogers then got the last touch on a Laura Unsworth drive at the top of the circle to score from England's second penalty corner in the middle of the second half. Australia's second half pressure yielded four penalty corner chances, all saved by Storry. Earlier China reversed its 4-1 loss to Germany in the pool match to take seventh place with a 5-3 goalfest win over the Germans. China took a 4-0 lead after 30 minutes with one goal by Sun Sinan, two by Zhao Yudiao and another by Song Qingling. Marie Maevers started Germany's comeback, scoring before the break. Janine Beermann and Julia Mueller added goals for Germany early in the second half to claw back to 4-3 in favour of China. Zhao Yudiao gave China a two goal advantage in the middle of the second half and recovery proved to be a bridge too far for Germany. South Korea, replaced overnight in the final by Argentina, play New Zealand later for the bronze medal. The Argentinians will face the Netherlands in the final. |
News Djokovic stuns Nadal to clinch Wimbledon title
LONDON: Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, dethroning champion Rafael Nadal with a 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 triumph to celebrate his coronation as new world number one in style.
It was the 24-year-old Serb's third Grand Slam title, to add to his 2008 and 2011 Australian Open victories, and 50th win his last 51 matches.
Djokovic, who will succeed Nadal as world number one on Monday, also denied the Spaniard, the champion here in 2008 and 2010, an 11th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic went into the final with a 11-16 losing record against Nadal over their five-year rivalry but having won all four of their clashes in 2011 and all in finals.
Serve dominated until the 10th game when from 30-0 up Nadal handed his opponent a set point with a forehand error which Djokovic gobbled up, forcing another wild forehand out of the Spaniard to take the opener after 41 minutes.
The Serb had been the more convincing in the rallies and Nadal, who committed just seven unforced errors in his semi-final win over Andy Murray, was already up to eight by the time Djokovic was 1-0 ahead in the second set.
Djokovic was taking control of the final and was a break up at 2-0 when he brilliantly anticipated a Nadal drop shot before scampering across court to execute a wonderful, wrong-footing backhand.
The Serb broke again for a 5-1 lead when a powerful drive left Nadal scrambling, and off balance, and he could only pat the return wide.
A confident hold to love gave Djokovic the set 6-1 when Nadal found the net.
But Nadal, who had won all five of the pair's previous Grand Slam clashes, carved out his first break points of the final in the second game of the third set to open a 2-0 lead which was soon 3-0 courtesy of a confident love service game.
Djokovic served up a first double fault to be broken again in the sixth game before Nadal pulled off a third successive love game to take the set.
The Serb saved a break point in the first game of the fourth set and made the most of his reprieve with a break to lead 2-0.
But a net cord fell in Nadal's favour and gave him the break back in the third game.
A subdued Nadal then slipped 3-5 down as a brilliant defensive rally from Djokovic forced an error from the Spaniard.
The trophy was the Serb's when on his first match point when Nadal went long with a backhand.

Argentina opener in Copa
LA PLATA, Argentina: Sergio Aguero scored on a soaring volley in the 76th minute as Argentina, bidding to end a trophy drought going back to 1993, kicked off the 43rd Copa America with a disappointing 1-1 draw with minnows Bolivia at La Plata outside Buenos Aires.
Bolivia weathered a first-half storm at the Ciudad de La Plata stadium and shocked Argentina two minutes into the second-half when Jhasmany Campos hit a corner low to the near post where striker Edivaldo Rojas back-heeled it past goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
With the game heading into the closing stages, Argentina equalised when defender Nicolas Burdisso chested down a cross from Marcos Rojo and Aguero volleyed home.
“This makes us sad because we did not achieve our objective, which was to win,” Argentina’s Lionel Messi said. “We did things well, but we have to improve.”
It was a stuttering start for coach Sergio Batista and hosts Argentina, who were out-hustled for much of the Group A match, and did little to justify their tag as joint favorite for the South American championship, along with Brazil.
The hosts dominated the first 10 minutes, but after that Bolivia began out-working the Argentines at midfield and winning more possession.
“The referee let them get away with some things,” forward Carlos Tevez said. “But we can’t blame him. We did not play well.”
Aguero added that “it was difficult and we have to be more relaxed and correct some things. They complicated things defending like they were.”
Messi, regarded by many as the world’s best player, again failed to translate his stunning club form with Barcelona onto the international stage. He seldom threatened to score or set up goals.
“I don’t want to play like Barcelona, that is very difficult,” Batista said.
Batista’s men came into the tournament under pressure to deliver the goods after their humiliating World Cup defeat at the hands of Germany last summer in South Africa, a loss which saw Batista’s former 1986 World Cup-winning teammate Diego Maradona dispensed with as coach.
On Friday, the albiceleste were also mindful of an even worse, if somewhat less public, humiliation which Bolivia visited upon them in the World Cup qualifiers in the pair’s last meeting — a 6-1 hiding in La Paz in April 2009, albeit at high altitude.
Although Brazil, who start their campaign at La Plata on Sunday (today) against Venezuela, have won only eight continental crowns to 14 for Argentina and Uruguay, they have bagged four of the last five editions — Colombia interrupting the sequence in 2001.
However hard both Argentina and Brazil will vie for regional dominance here over the coming month, both countries have an eye primarily on moulding a team for the 2014 World Cup, which Brazil will host for the first time since 1950.
Even so, Batista, who led the Olympic team to gold in Beijing three years ago, has resolved to prevent a third straight Brazilian triumph in the competition at the hosts’ expense. The samba stars defeated this year’s hosts in both of the last two finals.
