News Gilbert win dramatic first stage

LES HERBIERS, France: Belgian Philippe Gilbert of the Omega Pharma team won an incident-filled first stage of the Tour de France here on Saturday and took the race leader’s yellow jersey.
Defending champion Alberto Contador of Spain was involved in a mass pile-up 9km from the finish and cam home almost 90sec off the pace set by Gilbert, who this season dominated the hilly Ardennes Classics, winning the Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege inside eight days.
The trio of Jeremy Roy, and Tour debutants Perrig Quemeneur and Lieuwe Westra led an early breakout from the off, but were gradually hauled back in by Gilbert’s team with some 20km to go of the 191.5km run from Passage du Gois to Mont des Alouettes.
In a dramatic climax, the peloton was effectively sliced in two when an Astana rider clipped a stray spectator and
rebounded into the main body of riders, including Contador, to cause a massive pile-up.
There was then another pile-up which cut the lead body of riders to around 30.
Gilbert bade his time as first Alexandre Vinkourov and then Fabien Cancellara sprinted through to the front.
Cancellara, however, bolted too soon, allowing Gilbert to catch him on the last-but-one turn and the Belgian coasted home from 500m to finish 3sec ahead of Australian Cadel Evans, with Norwegian Thor Hushovd leading the chasing peloton at 6sec.

Cook score helps to england (cricket)

LONDON: England captain Alastair Cook's career-best century kept Sri Lanka at bay in the third one-day international (ODI) at Lord's here on Sunday.

But with no other England batsman making more than Kevin Pietersen's 41, the hosts were still held to 246 for seven.

England's total would have been considerably worse had not Cook been reprieved on 15 when Mahela Jayawardene dropped a regulation slip catch.

As it was Cook, also dropped by Thilina Kandamby at third man on 103, went on to make 119.

He shared stands of 72, with Ian Bell (30), and 75, with Tim Bresnan (26) for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively after England had collapsed to 85 for four.

Cook was on course to become only the second batsman, after fellow England left-handed opener Nick Knight, to bat through a full 50-over ODI innings when he was run out attempting a bye by Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara.

In all he faced 143 balls with 13 fours -- not the most rapid run-rate but hugely valuable in the context of the match.

This was only Cook's second century in 29 ODI innings and his highest, surpassing the 102 made against India at Southampton in 2007.

The 26-year-old who in Sri Lanka's 69-run series levelling win at Headingley on Friday won the toss and fielded because England would "quite fancy chasing" only to see the tourists pile up 309, opted to bat first at Lord's.

Cook, belying his reputation as a slow scorer, forced Angelo Mathews off the backfoot for four in the first over.

It was the only over Mathews, struggling with a knee injury, bowled.

Cook should have been out when he edged Nuwan Kulasekara only for the normally reliable Jayawardene to drop the two-handed chance.

Pietersen, looking in excellent touch, dominated a third wicket stand of 49, of which Cook's share was just seven, before leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis checked England's recovery with two wickets.

First he induced Pietersen, who faced just 43 balls, to sky a sweep to deep square leg where Suraj Randiv held a well-judged catch and Mendis then had left-hander Eoin Morgan lbw for four.

England trump to australians for fifth spot

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: England beat Australia 2-0 to take fifth place in the women's field hockey Champions Trophy here Sunday.

Fresh from beating Australia 3-2 in the last pool match Friday, the English had Beckie Herbert and Chloe Rogers to thank for their goals while goalkeeper Beth Storry played a stormer to keep a clean sheet.

Helen Richardson set up England's first goal early in the game with a self-pass free hit near the top of Australia's circle, pushed to the left post for Herbert to rebound off the pads of Australian keeper Rachael Lynch into the left of goal.

Rogers then got the last touch on a Laura Unsworth drive at the top of the circle to score from England's second penalty corner in the middle of the second half.

Australia's second half pressure yielded four penalty corner chances, all saved by Storry.

Earlier China reversed its 4-1 loss to Germany in the pool match to take seventh place with a 5-3 goalfest win over the Germans.

China took a 4-0 lead after 30 minutes with one goal by Sun Sinan, two by Zhao Yudiao and another by Song Qingling.

Marie Maevers started Germany's comeback, scoring before the break.

Janine Beermann and Julia Mueller added goals for Germany early in the second half to claw back to 4-3 in favour of China.

Zhao Yudiao gave China a two goal advantage in the middle of the second half and recovery proved to be a bridge too far for Germany.

South Korea, replaced overnight in the final by Argentina, play New Zealand later for the bronze medal. The Argentinians will face the Netherlands in the final.

News Djokovic stuns Nadal to clinch Wimbledon title

LONDON: Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, dethroning champion Rafael Nadal with a 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 triumph to celebrate his coronation as new world number one in style.

It was the 24-year-old Serb's third Grand Slam title, to add to his 2008 and 2011 Australian Open victories, and 50th win his last 51 matches.

Djokovic, who will succeed Nadal as world number one on Monday, also denied the Spaniard, the champion here in 2008 and 2010, an 11th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic went into the final with a 11-16 losing record against Nadal over their five-year rivalry but having won all four of their clashes in 2011 and all in finals.

Serve dominated until the 10th game when from 30-0 up Nadal handed his opponent a set point with a forehand error which Djokovic gobbled up, forcing another wild forehand out of the Spaniard to take the opener after 41 minutes.

The Serb had been the more convincing in the rallies and Nadal, who committed just seven unforced errors in his semi-final win over Andy Murray, was already up to eight by the time Djokovic was 1-0 ahead in the second set.

Djokovic was taking control of the final and was a break up at 2-0 when he brilliantly anticipated a Nadal drop shot before scampering across court to execute a wonderful, wrong-footing backhand.

The Serb broke again for a 5-1 lead when a powerful drive left Nadal scrambling, and off balance, and he could only pat the return wide.

A confident hold to love gave Djokovic the set 6-1 when Nadal found the net.

But Nadal, who had won all five of the pair's previous Grand Slam clashes, carved out his first break points of the final in the second game of the third set to open a 2-0 lead which was soon 3-0 courtesy of a confident love service game.

Djokovic served up a first double fault to be broken again in the sixth game before Nadal pulled off a third successive love game to take the set.

The Serb saved a break point in the first game of the fourth set and made the most of his reprieve with a break to lead 2-0.

But a net cord fell in Nadal's favour and gave him the break back in the third game.

A subdued Nadal then slipped 3-5 down as a brilliant defensive rally from Djokovic forced an error from the Spaniard.

The trophy was the Serb's when on his first match point when Nadal went long with a backhand.

Argentina opener in Copa

LA PLATA, Argentina: Sergio Aguero scored on a soaring volley in the 76th minute as Argentina, bidding to end a trophy drought going back to 1993, kicked off the 43rd Copa America with a disappointing 1-1 draw with minnows Bolivia at La Plata outside Buenos Aires.
Bolivia weathered a first-half storm at the Ciudad de La Plata stadium and shocked Argentina two minutes into the second-half when Jhasmany Campos hit a corner low to the near post where striker Edivaldo Rojas back-heeled it past goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
With the game heading into the closing stages, Argentina equalised when defender Nicolas Burdisso chested down a cross from Marcos Rojo and Aguero volleyed home.
“This makes us sad because we did not achieve our objective, which was to win,” Argentina’s Lionel Messi said. “We did things well, but we have to improve.”
It was a stuttering start for coach Sergio Batista and hosts Argentina, who were out-hustled for much of the Group A match, and did little to justify their tag as joint favorite for the South American championship, along with Brazil.
The hosts dominated the first 10 minutes, but after that Bolivia began out-working the Argentines at midfield and winning more possession.
“The referee let them get away with some things,” forward Carlos Tevez said. “But we can’t blame him. We did not play well.”
Aguero added that “it was difficult and we have to be more relaxed and correct some things. They complicated things defending like they were.”
Messi, regarded by many as the world’s best player, again failed to translate his stunning club form with Barcelona onto the international stage. He seldom threatened to score or set up goals.
“I don’t want to play like Barcelona, that is very difficult,” Batista said.
Batista’s men came into the tournament under pressure to deliver the goods after their humiliating World Cup defeat at the hands of Germany last summer in South Africa, a loss which saw Batista’s former 1986 World Cup-winning teammate Diego Maradona dispensed with as coach.
On Friday, the albiceleste were also mindful of an even worse, if somewhat less public, humiliation which Bolivia visited upon them in the World Cup qualifiers in the pair’s last meeting — a 6-1 hiding in La Paz in April 2009, albeit at high altitude.
Although Brazil, who start their campaign at La Plata on Sunday (today) against Venezuela, have won only eight continental crowns to 14 for Argentina and Uruguay, they have bagged four of the last five editions — Colombia interrupting the sequence in 2001.
However hard both Argentina and Brazil will vie for regional dominance here over the coming month, both countries have an eye primarily on moulding a team for the 2014 World Cup, which Brazil will host for the first time since 1950.
Even so, Batista, who led the Olympic team to gold in Beijing three years ago, has resolved to prevent a third straight Brazilian triumph in the competition at the hosts’ expense. The samba stars defeated this year’s hosts in both of the last two finals.

Indian cricket news

NORTH SOUND, Antigua and Barbuda: Rohit Sharma's resolute 86 not out topped Andre Russell's brutal, unbeaten 92 to lead India to a series-clinching, three-wicket victory over West Indies in the third one-day international on Saturday.

Sharma struck five fours and two sixes from 91 balls, and put on a crucial 88 for the seventh wicket with Harbhajan Singh to the put India on course to successfully chase 226 for victory, with 22 balls remaining.

The 24-year-old Sharma smoked a no-ball from Kemar Roach to the long-on boundary to usher the visitors over the line at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, after they too, had run into trouble on 92 for six in the 23rd over.

The result gave the world champions an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Russell smashed eight fours and five sixes from 64 balls in a dazzling display, finishing with the highest innings by a West Indies batsman at the VRCG, and helping the home team reach a respectable 225 for eight from their allocation of 50 overs.

His efforts with the bat, which helped earn him the man-of-the-match award, came after leg-spinner Amit Mishra followed-up on his career-best bowling in the second one-dayer with three for 28 from his 10 overs, and Munaf Patel supported with three for 60 from his 10 overs.

Mishra and Munaf prospered, as the West Indies' frontline batting suffered another crisis of confidence, and the hosts were tottering on 96 for seven in the 30th over.

India, choosing to field, met token resistance from the West Indies top-order before all-rounder Russell, one of three changes to his side's line-up, transformed the complexion of the innings.

India seized firm control of the game, following a second-wicket stand of 65 between Lendl Simmons - with 45 off 68 balls - and Ramnaresh Sarwan - 28 off 38 balls.

Mishra triggered another inexplicible West Indies collapse, after Sarwan was run out in the 15th over, six wickets falling for 31 between the 15th and 30th overs.

India's grip was severely loosened when Russell entered and dominated the next two partnerships - 78 from 96 balls for the eighth wicket with compatriot Carlton Baugh, and 51 - unbroken - from the last 28 balls of the innings for the ninth wicket with Kemar Roach.

India then also found themselves scrambling when four wickets fell for 32 between the 16th and 23rd overs.

But Sharma and Harbhajan Singh, whose 41 occupied 64 deliveries, showed incredible restraint. Harbhajan's patience ran out in the 41st over, when he skied a delivery from Russell, and was caught behind.

India required 46 from the last 54 balls, and through a combination of some big hitting from Praveen Kumar in 25 not out, and wayward West Indies bowling, they coasted the rest of the way.

West Indies have now lost all five ODIs they have played at the VRCG, following its inauguration four years ago ahead of the 2007 World Cup.

The series continues here on Monday.

Denies US Clinton seeking to be World Bank chief

WASHINGTON: Top US administration officials vehemently denied suggestions Thursday that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in talks to lead the World Bank.

"It's 100 percent untrue," Philippe Reines, a close advisor to Clinton, told.

"To be crystal clear," he added in a second statement, "Secretary Clinton has not had any conversations with the president, the White House or anyone about moving to the World Bank.

"She has expressed absolutely no interest in the job. She would not take it if offered."

White House spokesman Jay Carney also chipped in, saying: "The story is completely untrue."

US officials were referring to a report from the Reuters news agency that said Clinton was in discussions with the White House to leave her job next year and take over as head of the World Bank, replacing Robert Zoellick should he leave at the end of his term in mid-2012.

A source close to the global lender had earlier this week also indicated that the United States was studying her possible candidacy at the World Bank, where an American has traditionally holds the top job.

"It's a strong, serious hypothesis which they are working on," said the source, who was familiar with the matter but asked not to be named.

"There have been lots of signals" for the past months, the source added, saying they were mainly coming from the US Treasury Department.

A Treasury spokesperson declined to comment on the report.

Clinton has publicly said on several occasions that she will step down as secretary of state at the end of the current administration, and speculation has swirled around her future plans. (AFP)

President zardari bb had U.S support, clearance/ Wikileaks

KARACHI: Asif Ali Zardari, expressing his views said, “ U.S. is “our safety blanket” and recounted how Benazir had returned despite the threats against her because of support and “clearance” from the U.S., according to the whistleblower Wikileaks’ disclosure of U.S. Ambassador’s cable dated January 28, 2008.

Zardari acknowledged that he had believed that the more he would get closer to General Kayani, the more Kayani would be weakened.

Wikileaks spilled the beans from one of the statements of Khayber Pukhtunkhaw Chief Minister, Amir Haider Khan Hoti. Peshawar U.S. Counsel Principal Officer Tracy’s cable dated April 30, 2009 sent to Washington said that Amir Haider Khan Hoti has appreciated the drone attacks, but he (Hoti) also said that he could never support it in public.

Lahore U.S. Counsel Principal Officer Brian Hunt said that former Governor Punjab, Salman Taseer flayed Shahbaz Sharif’s government. In a cable dated December 31, 2008, Brian Hunt wrote that Salman Taseer was of the view that Shahbaz Sharif’s government was highly heart burning. “Shahbaz Sharif is hard working, but just like my gardener. Brian Hunt in memo dated February 7, 2009 wrote that Salman Taseer has nothing to do with the lawyers’ long march and he is getting ready for celebrating Basant and he would see that whether the people give importance to Islamabad march or Basant party.

Islamabad’s U.S. diplomat Peter Bodde in his May 2, 2006 memo wrote that F-16 galore the thought of Pakistan Air Force. U.S. Ambassador N. W. Patterson in a cable dated February 7, 2008 sent to Washington stated that Pakistan seemed clouded with moral degradation.

South American major disruptions

BUENOS AIRES: The vast ash cloud spewing from Chile's Puyehue volcano caused major disruption to South American air travel on Thursday, grounding hundreds of flights and upsetting regional diplomacy.

All flights in and out of the Argentine capital were halted, as well as most arriving or departing the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, forcing President Jose Mujica to postpone a Buenos Aires meeting with his Argentine counterpart.

As the travel misery intensified, organizers were also forced to delay Friday's first annual meeting in Buenos Aires of finance ministers from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) regional bloc. No new date was set.

The volcano, which rumbled to life on Saturday for the first time since 1960, is high in the Andes mountains, 870 kilometers (540 miles) south of the Chilean capital Santiago, near the border with Argentina.

Winds have spread the ash across much of southern Argentina, threatening to hurt tourism at the start of the winter ski season, as well as into Uruguay and southern Brazil, where airlines suspended flights "at least" until Friday.

Chilean volcano monitors said Puyehue was belching ash columns that reached nearly 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles) into the sky.

A Buenos Aires aviation official said the ash was some 9,000 meters (29,000 feet) above the Argentine capital, adding that planes generally fly at 10,000 meters (33,000 feet).

Volcanic ash "is very dangerous, very abrasive for plane engines, and could result in very serious complications," warned Argentine Transportation Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi.

At Jorge Newbery International Airport in Buenos Aires, some travelers were clearly beginning to despair, while others waited anxiously for loved ones. (AFP)

Rangers case youth killing in karachi

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on Friday ordered to post out Sindh Inspector General (IG) Police and Director General (DG) Rangers Sindh within three days.

The Supreme Court had taken sou moto notice on Thursday of the killing of a youth, Sarfaraz Shah by some rangers' personnel on Wednesday in Karachi.

A five-member special bench headed by CJP and comprising Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Amir Hani Muslim heard the case.

The CJP termed the killing a barbaric act and said that both the officials should have resigned. He said an independent investigation was not possible in the presence of these two officials and hence they should be posted out. In case if notification in this regard is not issued their salaries would be stopped, he said.

The trial court was also instructed to hear the case on day-to-day basis and complete it within 30 days. The apex court appointed DIG West Sultan Khawaja investigation officer.

Earlier, Sindh Inspector General Fayaz Leghari told the apex court that Sarfaraz died in the hospital during the treatment. The CJP said that the IG was misguiding the court. The video clipping shown by most of the prominent TV channels prime facie established the fact that about five to six persons of rangers caught hold of the deceased. Initially, he was caught from his hair and thereafter one of the persons opened fire on him as a result he sustained injuries and fell down crying for his life, begging that he should be moved to hospital.

Unfortunately no help was extended by the Rangers and he succumbed to his injuries in front of them, the CJ observed.

The CJ said that the manner in which Sarfaraz's murder had been committed clearly indicated barbarism. It is evident from the video that he had not fired upon Rangers and once he was over powered by them he should had been handed over to police.

The Federal Interior Secretary told the court that Rangers were under the control of Sindh administration and the deployment notification was revised after three months.

The Chief Justice asked to submit the Rangers deployment notification in the court. The court was also informed that two Ranger men Shahid Zafar and Mohammed Afzal involved in the killing were been handed over to police.

Killed 28 during anti-government protests in Syria

DAMASCUS: The death toll from firing by Syrian security forces on anti-government demonstrators went up to at least 28.

Widespread demonstrations were staged in the capital Damascus, Banias, Darra, Homs and other cities, however security forces backed by tanks, mortar and helicopters opened indiscriminate fire on the demonstrators resulting in the death of at least 28 people, while several others were injured.

According to Arab TV, most of the casualties were reported from the outskirts of Damascus, the North Western province of Edlib and the coastal town of Lilzaquia.

Meanwhile in Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner told journalists that President Bashar al Assad had refused to undertake reforms and the US was mulling over how to mount pressure on him.

US national arrested

ISLAMABAD: Mathew Craig, the US national who was arrested in Islamabad yesterday on charges of illegal stay has been sent on 14-day remand to Adiala Jail, Geo News reported.

He was arrested from sector I-11 of the capital city on Friday and presented before the court of Judge Kashif Qayum today (Saturday).

According to police, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry had ordered him to leave the country by June 4 but his presence here after this date was in violation of the Foreign Act.

Mathew Craig had been arrested by intelligence agencies on June 10 in Fateh Jang which is considered to be a sensitive area of the country, sources said. Upon this, the Interior Ministry had canceled his visa.

The arrested US national is of the view that Pakistan’s intelligence agencies were trying to eject him from the country and that the action against him was being taken at the behest of these agencies.

Peshawar Blast

PESHAWAR: Thirty-four persons were killed and over 80 others, including many journalists and some policemen, were injured in twin blasts near the offices of The News in Khyber Super Market here late on Saturday night.

The first blast occurred in a small restaurant at the back of the offices of The News and Geo in the densely populated Khyber Super Market in Peshawar Cantonment at around 11:45pm. When people, many of them journalists, gathered at the site of the explosion for coverage and rescue of the wounded, another powerful bomb ripped through.

Many of the journalists, rescue workers and policemen were either killed or injured in the two successive blasts.

There were reports that the first blast was of crackers to trap the media, police and rescue workers. A fire erupted after the second powerful explosion that engulfed the nearby Mumtaz Tower and other buildings. Windowpanes of several nearby buildings were smashed.

There were unconfirmed reports that the deceased included a local journalist. SP Cantt Shafiullah was also among those wounded.

The injured journalists included Sub-Editor of The News Barkatullah Marwat, Imran Bukhari and Safiullah of a private news vhannel and Fawad Ali Shah, a free-lancer.

“I was on the spot after the first blast when another powerful bomb went off,” said Imran Bukhari who sustained injuries to his leg. He said some of his friends in the media and police, who were standing close to him, were yet to be located.

Army and policemen cordoned off the area after the explosions. Officials of Rescue 1122 and other organisations were carrying the wounded to the Lady Reading Hospital. The fire brigade was busy in extinguishing the fire.

Rawalpindi News Desk adds: Talking to a private television channel, Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain confirmed that 34 persons were killed and 90 others injured in the explosions.

The minister termed the law and order situation in the province as very bad.
