Indian cricket news
NORTH SOUND, Antigua and Barbuda: Rohit Sharma's resolute 86 not out topped Andre Russell's brutal, unbeaten 92 to lead India to a series-clinching, three-wicket victory over West Indies in the third one-day international on Saturday.
Sharma struck five fours and two sixes from 91 balls, and put on a crucial 88 for the seventh wicket with Harbhajan Singh to the put India on course to successfully chase 226 for victory, with 22 balls remaining.
The 24-year-old Sharma smoked a no-ball from Kemar Roach to the long-on boundary to usher the visitors over the line at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, after they too, had run into trouble on 92 for six in the 23rd over.
The result gave the world champions an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Russell smashed eight fours and five sixes from 64 balls in a dazzling display, finishing with the highest innings by a West Indies batsman at the VRCG, and helping the home team reach a respectable 225 for eight from their allocation of 50 overs.
His efforts with the bat, which helped earn him the man-of-the-match award, came after leg-spinner Amit Mishra followed-up on his career-best bowling in the second one-dayer with three for 28 from his 10 overs, and Munaf Patel supported with three for 60 from his 10 overs.
Mishra and Munaf prospered, as the West Indies' frontline batting suffered another crisis of confidence, and the hosts were tottering on 96 for seven in the 30th over.
India, choosing to field, met token resistance from the West Indies top-order before all-rounder Russell, one of three changes to his side's line-up, transformed the complexion of the innings.
India seized firm control of the game, following a second-wicket stand of 65 between Lendl Simmons - with 45 off 68 balls - and Ramnaresh Sarwan - 28 off 38 balls.
Mishra triggered another inexplicible West Indies collapse, after Sarwan was run out in the 15th over, six wickets falling for 31 between the 15th and 30th overs.
India's grip was severely loosened when Russell entered and dominated the next two partnerships - 78 from 96 balls for the eighth wicket with compatriot Carlton Baugh, and 51 - unbroken - from the last 28 balls of the innings for the ninth wicket with Kemar Roach.
India then also found themselves scrambling when four wickets fell for 32 between the 16th and 23rd overs.
But Sharma and Harbhajan Singh, whose 41 occupied 64 deliveries, showed incredible restraint. Harbhajan's patience ran out in the 41st over, when he skied a delivery from Russell, and was caught behind.
India required 46 from the last 54 balls, and through a combination of some big hitting from Praveen Kumar in 25 not out, and wayward West Indies bowling, they coasted the rest of the way.
West Indies have now lost all five ODIs they have played at the VRCG, following its inauguration four years ago ahead of the 2007 World Cup.
The series continues here on Monday.

Denies US Clinton seeking to be World Bank chief
| WASHINGTON: Top US administration officials vehemently denied suggestions Thursday that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in talks to lead the World Bank. "It's 100 percent untrue," Philippe Reines, a close advisor to Clinton, told. "To be crystal clear," he added in a second statement, "Secretary Clinton has not had any conversations with the president, the White House or anyone about moving to the World Bank. "She has expressed absolutely no interest in the job. She would not take it if offered." White House spokesman Jay Carney also chipped in, saying: "The story is completely untrue." US officials were referring to a report from the Reuters news agency that said Clinton was in discussions with the White House to leave her job next year and take over as head of the World Bank, replacing Robert Zoellick should he leave at the end of his term in mid-2012. A source close to the global lender had earlier this week also indicated that the United States was studying her possible candidacy at the World Bank, where an American has traditionally holds the top job. "It's a strong, serious hypothesis which they are working on," said the source, who was familiar with the matter but asked not to be named. "There have been lots of signals" for the past months, the source added, saying they were mainly coming from the US Treasury Department. A Treasury spokesperson declined to comment on the report. Clinton has publicly said on several occasions that she will step down as secretary of state at the end of the current administration, and speculation has swirled around her future plans. (AFP) | ||

South American major disruptions
| BUENOS AIRES: The vast ash cloud spewing from Chile's Puyehue volcano caused major disruption to South American air travel on Thursday, grounding hundreds of flights and upsetting regional diplomacy. All flights in and out of the Argentine capital were halted, as well as most arriving or departing the Uruguayan capital Montevideo, forcing President Jose Mujica to postpone a Buenos Aires meeting with his Argentine counterpart. As the travel misery intensified, organizers were also forced to delay Friday's first annual meeting in Buenos Aires of finance ministers from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) regional bloc. No new date was set. The volcano, which rumbled to life on Saturday for the first time since 1960, is high in the Andes mountains, 870 kilometers (540 miles) south of the Chilean capital Santiago, near the border with Argentina. Winds have spread the ash across much of southern Argentina, threatening to hurt tourism at the start of the winter ski season, as well as into Uruguay and southern Brazil, where airlines suspended flights "at least" until Friday. Chilean volcano monitors said Puyehue was belching ash columns that reached nearly 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles) into the sky. A Buenos Aires aviation official said the ash was some 9,000 meters (29,000 feet) above the Argentine capital, adding that planes generally fly at 10,000 meters (33,000 feet). Volcanic ash "is very dangerous, very abrasive for plane engines, and could result in very serious complications," warned Argentine Transportation Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi. At Jorge Newbery International Airport in Buenos Aires, some travelers were clearly beginning to despair, while others waited anxiously for loved ones. (AFP) | ||
Rangers case youth killing in karachi
| ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on Friday ordered to post out Sindh Inspector General (IG) Police and Director General (DG) Rangers Sindh within three days. The Supreme Court had taken sou moto notice on Thursday of the killing of a youth, Sarfaraz Shah by some rangers' personnel on Wednesday in Karachi. A five-member special bench headed by CJP and comprising Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Amir Hani Muslim heard the case. The CJP termed the killing a barbaric act and said that both the officials should have resigned. He said an independent investigation was not possible in the presence of these two officials and hence they should be posted out. In case if notification in this regard is not issued their salaries would be stopped, he said. The trial court was also instructed to hear the case on day-to-day basis and complete it within 30 days. The apex court appointed DIG West Sultan Khawaja investigation officer. Earlier, Sindh Inspector General Fayaz Leghari told the apex court that Sarfaraz died in the hospital during the treatment. The CJP said that the IG was misguiding the court. The video clipping shown by most of the prominent TV channels prime facie established the fact that about five to six persons of rangers caught hold of the deceased. Initially, he was caught from his hair and thereafter one of the persons opened fire on him as a result he sustained injuries and fell down crying for his life, begging that he should be moved to hospital. Unfortunately no help was extended by the Rangers and he succumbed to his injuries in front of them, the CJ observed. The CJ said that the manner in which Sarfaraz's murder had been committed clearly indicated barbarism. It is evident from the video that he had not fired upon Rangers and once he was over powered by them he should had been handed over to police. The Federal Interior Secretary told the court that Rangers were under the control of Sindh administration and the deployment notification was revised after three months. The Chief Justice asked to submit the Rangers deployment notification in the court. The court was also informed that two Ranger men Shahid Zafar and Mohammed Afzal involved in the killing were been handed over to police. | ||
